At SSIS we believe that we are international students with an international responsibility to use our talents and education for positive global change.

GIVING TREE

GivingTreeProject: Preparing gift bags for the migrant families living in Shanghai. Bags will be filled with useful products and gifts. Looking for volunteers to staple, distribute and collect bags to be donated to families in need.

-staple the supply list to the bag (this is done at the Giving Tree headquaters) on Saturday, Oct 29th http://givingtreechina.org/home/

-volunteer to work at a booth outside the Merlion Cafe to distribute and collect the bags (20 volunteers) Distribution= November 16-22 Collection = December 5-9

PARTNERSHIP PROJECT

PP

What: Paired reading and mentorship with Primary students at a local Chinese Orphanage. Transportation to and from the orphanage is provided by the school.

When: Friday, CCA Period

ROOTS AND SHOOTS

KIDSTRONG PROGRAM-

RandSWhat: working with schools in the Min Hang area that have migrant worker children attending. Provide necessities like soy milk, boiled eggs, fruit as well as hygiene products like toothbrushes, toothpaste or even eye glasses!

When: - CCA block - Term 2 or collections can be set up for anytime.

How to get involved?:

a) sign up with Mrs. Cuglietta's KIDSTRONG for CCA term 2

or

b) write up a proposal to start a collection of hygiene products (mentioned above)

MILLION TREE PROJECT

MTPWhat: raise money and awareness for the growing problem of deforestation in Mongolia. Create a plan to raise money to purchase trees. Each tree costs 25 rmb.  Our school goal is to reach 1000 trees!

When: up to you

How to get involved: Write up a proposal  for a fundraiser.

An example is: plan a theme day to raise money for trees' - (ie. plan a day for everyone to wear jeans and a green top- each person who dresses this way donates 25 rmb to their Form teacher)

ON THE EDGE OF HOPE: Hope for Animals that are Endangered

EdgeofHopeWhat: Find out about endangered animals in this country and raise awareness/funds. Possibly set up an information booth in front of the Merlion Cafe or at Open House night.  Let people know what they can do to make sure this animal is protected.

MALARIA NETS IN AFRICA

malariaWhat: Malaria kills someone every 30 seconds. Many of the people who are bitten by mosquitoes that carry the virus are bitten at night. By providing a net for people to sleep under at night, they have a much better chance of not contracting Malaria.  Malaria nets can be purchased for 56 rmb each.

When: up to you

How to get involved: Put together a proposal or plan to attend "Stand Up For Day" in the spring.

- Purchase baking from the bake sale set up on November 3-5, 2011 dedicated to Malaria nets

Project: Paired reading with young students at local Chinese Schhol

Location: Shanghai Childrens Home

Time: Each Friday from 1:50 pm-3:30 pm

Transportation: SSIS to provide transportation to and from the school

How to join: Register in the next CCA signup session

- This is a great way to connect with students in the local schools and be positive role mode.
