Primary English

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The English Language curriculum will help pupils become independent learners, creative thinkers and problem solvers who can communicate effectively in English. Many opportunities are provided for students to use English in a variety of situations and contexts.

At the end of their primary education, students will be able to communicate

effectively in English. They will be able to:

  • listen to, read and view with understanding, accuracy and appreciation, a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts
  • speak, write and make presentations in internationally acceptable English that is grammatical, fluent and appropriate for purpose, audience, context and culture
  • interact effectively with people from their own or different cultures

The core English Language curriculum is supplemented with fun experiential learning - tasks and activities that allow students to apply their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. These engaging mini-projects include drama and skit presentations, newsletter production, comic book publishing, “time capsule” creations, and many more.

SPEECH PROGRAMME

The primary SPEECH programme conducted by our English teachers further hones students’ speaking skills, and provides a platform for them to give “real” presentations in front of an audience. Students enjoy playing the role of storytellers, newscasters, marketers and many more, to showcase their public speaking skills.

Intensive Support Programme - English

The Intensive Support Program (ISP) caters to students learning English as an additional language. The goal of the program is to improve the students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills to enable them to fully function in mainstream classes in the shortest time possible.

Academic Support

Sheltered Immersion: Intensive Support Programme students are immersed in the mainstream classes with additional specialist support.

English Support Class: ISP students receive additional English classes each week. English Support Class is a skills-based programme dedicated to developing students’ language skills in small group settings

Pull-out Class: Selected students receive additional individualized and focused instruction from the ISP teachers.

Comprehensive Assessment and Reporting

All ISP students receive individualised progress reports for ‘ISP English’ and Mainstream English. ISP English teachers provide an English Skills Assessment giving a clear view of the student’s progress. ISP students are assessed periodically both formally and informally to monitor student progress in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking,

After School English Programme

ISP students have access to the After School English Programme. This offers additional English language instruction in a small group setting.

ISP Parent Support

A regular meeting is held to share important information about the ISP and SSIS with parents. Translators are provided to facilitate communication.
