SCIENCE

The spirit of inquiry – this is what the Science curriculum seeks to nurture in our students. The primary Science syllabus aims to:

  • provide primary students with experiences which build on their interest in and stimulate their curiosity about their environment
  • provide students with basic scientific terms and concepts to help them understand themselves and the world around them
  • provide students with opportunities to develop skills, habits of mind and attitudes necessary for scientific inquiry
  • prepare students towards using scientific knowledge and methods in making personal decisions
  • help students appreciate how science influences people and the environment

The curriculum helps students develop their skills of observing, comparing, classifying, communicating, using apparatus and equipment, analyzing, generating possibilities, evaluating, formulating hypotheses, investigating, problem-solving and decision-making.

ASIA PACIFIC MATHEMATICAL OLYMPIAD FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS (APMOPS)

SSIS has been an active participating school in the Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS), hosted by the Hwa Chong Institution of Singapore.

Hwa Chong Institution of Singapore is a premier independent school with a rich history of 90 years. The school has the highest Oxford University and Cambridge University admission rate in Singapore and has the most number of awardees of the Singapore President’s Scholarship. The Asia Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (APMOPS) is a prestigious event whereby participants from countries in the Asia-Pacific region including Australia, India, Singapore, China, New Zealand and Vietnam get the opportunity to interact and compete with top mathematics geniuses.

Participants who are among the top qualifiers in the Asia Pacific region will be invited by Hwa Chong Institution to participate in the Invitation Round and Prize Presentation Ceremony each year at Hwa Chong Institution in Singapore. During the Invitation Round, participants will have the opportunity to interact and compete with top mathematics geniuses from countries in the Asia Pacific region.

SSIS is pleased to share that, over the past years, many gold, silver and bronze award winners have emerged from our school. The students did our school proud by performing distinctively in the APMOPS.
