This day provided SSIS students with a dynamic and tangible experience that facilitated a connection between their academic pursuits and professional endeavours in the future.
Additionally, Career Day provides a platform to develop meaningful and personal connections between our students, alumni, parents and friends. Career Day is one way that our school counselling team encourages students to explore their interests and passions as an extension of their academic program and in the process better understand themselves, their community, and the world.
Students from Grade 9 to Grade 12 had the opportunity to listen to eight guest speakers working in a variety of fields to gather some insight into what a day may be like for them and what the prerequisites are for a specific career. Guest speakers on that day ranged from an entrepreneur to a psychologist to a specialist in renewable energy.
Grade 10 Victoria Cheah said: “The guests patiently gave brief overviews of their jobs, explained why they decided on their respective careers and helped students to navigate the working world. Despite having to speak for two sessions, their passion, motivation and dedication never faltered and they were extremely infectious and inspiring. Sessions were carried out in an almost interview-like style – students eagerly flung their hands up and fired off questions that the speakers diligently answered.”
The eight different career options catered to the students’ needs and were a great start to get them thinking about their future, especially for the younger grades.
Alice Hsu from Grade 12, now in her final days of university application and a soon-to-be graduate said:” The Renewable Energy session was really good, what the speaker shared about his experience inspired me a lot.”
It is certain that everyone took home valuable lessons that day. Career Day was an undeniable success.
