SSIS International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

IB – “Education for A Better World”

Small Cohort – Personal Individual Touch in IB

We strive to cater to a large school population without losing the personal individual touch that has been successfully established over the last 11 years. Classes are small, ranging from 5 to 24 students. Our students are given personal advice about the choice of IB Diploma subjects. This advice is given in coordination with our IB Coordinator and our university counselors. Parents are involved fully in this process and information events are staged for parents and students.

Over a two-year period, students study subjects from six different categories; they participate in Theory of Knowledge classes and have to submit an Extended Essay on a subject of their choice. Outside of the classroom students participate in activities related to Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS).

SSIS International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

2017-2018 Available Courses

*Please note these subject offerings vary on a year-to-year basis and are dependent on student numbers and available teaching resources.

All three parts of the core—extended essay, theory of knowledge and creativity, activity, service—are compulsory and are central to the philosophy of the Diploma Programme. The three core requirements are:

Extended Essay (EE)

The extended essay has a prescribed limit of 4,000 words. It offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of individual interest, and acquaints students with the independent research and writing skills expected at university.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

TOK is an interdisciplinary requirement intended to stimulate critical reflection on the knowledge and experience gained inside and outside the classroom. The course challenges students to question the bases of knowledge, to be aware of subjective and ideological biases, to develop the ability to analyse evidence that is expressed in rational argument.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

Participation in the school’s CAS programme encourages students to be involved in artistic pursuits, sports and community service work, thus fostering students’ awareness and appreciation of life outside the academic arena.
