Plant Water, the winning photograph
SSIS student Anselm Wiethoff in the frame for fame
after winning a photography competition
Anselm Wiethoff was “just fooling around with his grandfather’s camera last summer” when he started posting his photos on Instagram. Eight months later, he won 500rmb in a photography competition organised by That’s Shanghai. This was a proud moment, although the reward came as bit of a surprise to him. Anselm is a grade 9 student at SSIS and he is passionate about photography. He explains how his hobby became his passion in this exclusive interview with the SSIS Marketing department.
How did you become interested in photography?
Nothing and nobody really inspired me to take photos. I was just fooling around with my grandfather’s camera back last summer. I started posting photos from that summer on Instagram and got some pretty good feedback from random friends and so I continued to take photos. I think Instagram really helped me to keep going.
What do you like most about taking photos?
What I like most is the result of the good shots I take. Taking a photo is like pausing a moment that only you can see, capturing it and keeping the memory with you, and sharing it.
What is your favorite subject to photograph?
I mostly take urban photos in cities. Rural isn’t my thing.
What is your favorite time of the day to take photos?
I’ve only recently learnt by myself that time is important when getting a good shot. My favorite time of day to take shots is before sundown, not for the golden hour but just because lighting is good at the time and you get some good composition into your shots.
Do you have a favorite season?
I like winter, because I like cold/moody tones, who doesn’t?
Do you have a friend who keeps you company or do you always “work alone”?
Sometimes I go out with a friend or two that also takes photos, usually from another school, or a famous Instagrammer and we hit up some rooftops to explore. Otherwise when everybody is busy, I go out by myself to random places and hope for some luck to get some good shots for the day.
Have you ever entered a photography competition?
I’ve only entered one photography competition; it was one from ‘That’s Shanghai’. I submitted a photo and a week later I got an email from them saying that I won 500 bucks!
Do you like showing your photos to your friends, family, teachers?
I love sharing my photos, I post the best ones on Instagram and I show some to friends, my parents and to some teachers that I’m very close with.
Would you like to be a professional photographer one day?
Many friends have been asking me this, and even telling me to take photography as a career. But no, I won’t be a professional photographer in the future, and I don’t even label myself as a ‘Photographer’ now, I just like exploring, meeting new people, creating, inspiring and sharing.
What camera do you use?
I use a Canon EOS 750D + 18-55mm lens, very amateur equipment, haha.
