An official ‘Swim England Learn to Swim’ School

SSIS is an official SWIM ENGLAND Learn to Swim School. The SSIS Swimming Programme provides students with a unique opportunity to learn swimming from an early age. The programme works on all of the building blocks to swimming. We aim to equip all our students with swimming skills, as well as to enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM

Adapted from the “Swim England” programme, our Physical Education Swim Curriculum aims to develop confident and competent swimmers. This framework builds the skills and motivation needed to develop a lifelong love of water and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle through swimming.

Starting from Preschool (Kindergarten 1), students learn all of the building blocks to swimming success such as water confidence, face and head submersion, breathing, blowing bubbles and floating. We coach more advanced swimmers on correcting their strokes and techniques for continuous swimming.

Level awards are given to students at the end of each rotation. The unique curriculum allows our students to progress and develop their swimming ability over the years.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION

Within the PE lessons, the “Talent Identification Programme” helps to identify talent early and provides students with opportunities to develop their skills and ability further. Swim trials are also conducted each school year.

Co-curricular Activities (CCAs)

Swim CCA allows interested Primary students with more time in the pool, concentrating on stroke correction.

After School Programme (ASP)

Students starting from Kindergarten 2 onwards have the opportunity to participate in the Swim ASP. Competent swimmers from Grade 1 onwards will be invited to join the Sabres Swim Team.

Development Squad

Swimmers in the 8s & Under Development Squad do not compete, but learn about swim meet etiquette and are coached in how to race and how to train according to World Wide guidelines. It prepares students to compete when they reach the age of nine. While they do not compete competitively, under 8’s get to participate in fun development meets and external competitions. These meets are all about having fun and giving them the exposure.

Competitive Squad

The Competitive squads for students aged nine and above will have to commit to training hours and will be able to participate in various swim events and competitions.
The Sabres Swim Team compete regularly within the Shanghai Swim League (SSL), which was set up for all international schools in Shanghai and beyond. SSL events take place throughout the year, usually in rounds and end with the SSL Championships and then the annual Long Course Meet at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center.
Our swimmers also take part in the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS) swim events and other various invitational swim meets, giving them a wide range of competitive opportunities. (See list of swim events in the calendar below)

OUR FACILITIES

Our newly completed SSIS Aquatic Centre houses a six-lane competitive indoor swimming pool heated by a solar panel rooftop and a viewing gallery that seats close to 200 spectators. There is also a shallow pool for beginners and preschoolers. We are committed to ensuring our students acquire a useful life skill, train from a young age, and we provide the best resources to facilitate recreational and competitive swimming.
