Aesthetics News

T1W4 – 22 Sept 2023

Dear Parents and SSIS Community,

I hope this finds you well. As the new year gets underway, the Aesthetics department has hit the ground running. We are excited to see students taking part in so many activities both on and off campus in the first few weeks of school.

‘Love & Health’

Students across all three divisions have submitted artwork that will be displayed at the soon to be opened Children’s division at Parkway Hospital. We have collected some truly artistic and inspiring pieces; we will update the community once these are on display and available to view.

School Productions

Both Primary and Senior school productions have been chosen, and both are sure to be crowd-pleasers! In Primary, we will be putting on the musical production ‘Bamboozled’, a story about a panda named Yun Zi who is on his way from China to the Edinburgh Zoo to meet Mei Sheng, a female panda who is waiting for him there, when his plane gets diverted, and he and his friends must find their way to the zoo on their own. In Senior school, students will side with either Romeo and the Montagues or Juliet and the Capulets in the classic Shakespeare play ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Art Field Trips

Our Grade 10 GCSE Art students will be making a trip to the iconic M50 art district on September 28th. This is one of Shanghai’s original art districts and is an area that all art students (and non-artists alike) often visit.

A Strings Opportunity

On October 27th, Grade 6 strings students will be combining forces with four other area schools at Shanghai American School to rehearse for the entire day, then put on a concert in the early evening. This is an initiative led by two second year IBDP students at SAS and will surely be an enriching experience for SSIS string students.

New Initiatives

Two new events have been unveiled this year—Patio Jamz and Déjeuner Shindigs! The first Patio Jamz is on September 28th and will feature the band ‘Not Yet’. This is an outdoor casual concert event that will feature student bands once a month throughout the year. The emphasis is on getting students in front of an audience and allowing them to test out their material; performances are not meant to be highly polished (although they might be!) The first Déjeuner Shindig will be on September 22nd. This event is open to any students who wish to perform, whether it’s singing, dancing, acting, magic, or anything else that can be performed onstage. We will select up to six students per event on a first-come, first-served basis. Students should email Mr. Hicks at michael_hicks@ssis.asia to express their interest.

Upcoming Performances

There is so much more to come this term—student performances at the International Family Bazaar; our annual Christmas tree lighting, and our Winter Concert. Please look for updates regarding these events in upcoming editions of the newsletter. As always, we appreciate the continued support of the Aesthetics department from the entire SSIS community.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Michael Hicks

Director of Aesthetics
