New Sabre Family Coffee Morning
On September 9th, we welcomed our new SSIS Sabre families to a special Coffee Morning, providing an opportunity to connect with grade level coordinators, and principals. This year, we are delighted to have welcomed the numerous new students into our community. Parents were invited to share how their child’s first month at SSIS has been, ask questions, and learn more about what to expect in the months ahead. It was wonderful to hear so many positive stories about students settling in, building relationships, and already benefiting from their SSIS experience.
Our Coffee Mornings are held regularly throughout the year and provide families with opportunities to learn more about our curriculum and discover ways to become involved in their child’s academic life. Just as importantly, they create an informal space for open conversation between families, teachers, and school leaders. A strong home and school connection makes a meaningful difference, particularly for our youngest learners. When families and educators understand the reasons behind our approaches and reinforce consistent messages, we are better able to support our young sabres together.
Sabre Fun Day at Sun Island
The smiles and stories following our first ever Sabre Fun Day at Sun Island have said it all. Students are still talking about the wave pool and the many experiences they shared with their friends, teachers, and families. From music and fireworks to the bonfire and time in the pool, the day provided a wonderful opportunity to step outside our regular school routines and simply enjoy being together. Thank you to all the parents who made the trip to Sun Island and helped make the day such a memorable experience for our students.
Being part of SSIS extends far beyond what happens in the classroom. Academics, sports and recreation, excursions, after school activities, nutrition, and community events all contribute to the holistic experience we want for our students. When families, students, and teachers share these experiences together, we build the relationships and sense of belonging that contribute to a happy and well-rounded childhood. Judging by the number of students already requesting another Sabre Fun Day next year, and perhaps a little more time in the wave pool, this may be a tradition they would happily see continue!
Building a Safe, Caring and Connected Community
Supporting students socially is an important part of helping them thrive academically. This month, students participated in our annual assembly focused on bullying, where they explored what bullying is, the harm it can cause, and how each of us can be an upstander by speaking up, seeking help, and refusing to participate in unkind behaviour. This learning continues in classrooms through weekly community building and restorative circles, which provide students with opportunities to listen to one another, feel valued and heard, strengthen relationships, and work together to resolve conflicts when they arise.
Students have also participated in First Friends learning, exploring how to make and maintain friendships and considering what good friends do and do not do. Together, these experiences give students practical language and strategies they can draw upon when navigating the inevitable disagreements and challenges that are part of growing up. Thank you to our families for reinforcing these lessons at home. When school and home share consistent messages about kindness, friendship, responsibility, and repairing relationships, we give children a strong foundation for becoming caring and confident members of their community.
With our new students joining our community, our returning Sabres have also had many opportunities to put this learning into practice by helping new students feel welcomed and included while forging new friendships of their own.
