Early Years News

October has been a month of exciting excursions at SSIS, with students venturing beyond the classroom to deepen their understanding of the topics explored in their units of inquiry. These experiences bring learning to life, allowing children to make meaningful connections between classroom concepts and the world around them. Just as importantly, they help students recognise that learning happens everywhere, not just within the walls of a school or under the guidance of a teacher. By engaging with our wider community and learning from people with different skills, experiences, and expertise, students develop curiosity, broaden their perspectives, and discover that every experience offers an opportunity to learn.

K1 Fire Station Excursion

Our K1 students enjoyed an exciting visit to the local fire station as part of their Discovery of the World unit on Community Helpers. During the excursion, children had the opportunity to meet real firefighters, explore the fire station, and learn about the important role firefighters play in keeping our community safe. They discovered the different parts of a fire truck, explored firefighting equipment, asked questions, and even tried on firefighter uniforms. For many, the highlight was getting to spray water from a real fire hose!

Back in the classroom, students eagerly reflected on their adventures, sharing their favourite moments and recalling what they had learned. This hands-on experience brought their classroom learning to life, inspiring curiosity, developing communication skills, and deepening their appreciation for the people who help keep our communities safe.

K1 Little Chefs at Papa John’s

As part of their Discovery of the World unit on Community Helpers, our K1 students visited Papa John’s to discover what it takes to be a chef. During this delicious learning experience, children explored how pizzas are prepared and had the opportunity to create their own, carefully selecting ingredients and assembling their pizzas before enjoying the finished results. The excursion encouraged independence, creativity, and an appreciation for the people who prepare the food we enjoy. Best of all, students were excited to share a taste of their culinary creations with their families at home!

K2 Journey Around the World

Throughout October, our K2 students embarked on an exciting learning adventure, A Journey Around the World, exploring the diverse countries and cultures represented in their classrooms. Children discovered national flags, famous landmarks, traditional foods, clothing, and customs through engaging activities, including preparing cultural snacks, creating costumes, and designing collaborative posters. These experiences encouraged curiosity, creativity, teamwork, and an appreciation for cultural diversity.

The highlight of the month was a special sharing session where our K2 students became little cultural ambassadors, proudly presenting their learning to their younger K1 friends. Using their handmade posters, they confidently introduced different countries and shared interesting facts about their traditions. This wonderful opportunity strengthened their communication skills, built confidence, and celebrated the rich cultural diversity of our SSIS community.

K2 Exploring the Shanghai Greenhouse Garden

Our K2 students enjoyed a wonderful excursion to the Shanghai Greenhouse Garden, where they explored a fascinating variety of plants and growing environments. Building on their recent inquiry into continents and cultures around the world, children discovered how climate, temperature, and geographical location influence the types of plants that thrive in different regions. As they explored the gardens, students eagerly shared their knowledge, asked thoughtful questions, and made connections between their classroom learning and the natural world. This experience encouraged curiosity, observation, and a deeper appreciation for the diversity of our planet.

Grade 1 Exploring Chen Shan Botanical Garden

Our Grade 1 students enjoyed a wonderful excursion to Shanghai Chen Shan Botanical Garden, where they explored the greenhouses and discovered a fascinating variety of plants from different environments. As they wandered through the gardens, students had opportunities to observe unique plant features, compare different species, and consider how temperature, moisture, and sunlight influence plant growth. This engaging experience encouraged curiosity, strengthened observation skills, and helped students develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the importance of protecting our environment.

Grade 2 Sweet Adventures at Ganso Bakery

Our Grade 2 students enjoyed a delicious excursion to Ganso Bakery, where they discovered the art of cake-making and learned about the different steps involved in creating beautiful baked treats. Students gained insight into the skills and techniques used by professional bakers before putting their own creativity to work decorating individual cakes. This experience encouraged creativity, patience, and an appreciation for the craftsmanship behind everyday foods. The sweetest part was bringing their creations home to share with their families!
