MAP Growth Test

Understanding MAP Student Progress Report

This is the first year we have used NWEA’s MAP Growth tests. It was unfortunate that they had to be taken remotely. However, most of our grade three through six students were able to complete the MAP Growth standardized testing for math, English reading, English language, and science. If your child was unable to complete any of these tests then they will not receive a MAP Student Progress Report.

In the future, all students will be involved in the testing and this will help us monitor and report students’ growth from one testing session to the next. As we were only able to test once this year these results are a snapshot of students’ progress at this point in time.

As this is the first time your child has taken the MAP Growth test, he/she will only be compared with other students at SSIS. Subsequent tests will compare your child against other students from around the world.

The Quick Reference Guide produced by MAP is designed to help parents understand the Student Progress Report. However, for this testing session, much of the information is missing from the report. Most of the missing information will be included when we test again in September.

The guide is rather technical and may be hard to understand. For this reason, we’ve put together the below notes and a short video to help you understand your child’s results.

  • Students were tested in four academic disciplines – math, English reading, English language usage and science.
  • For each subject area, you see a bar graph that shows the RIT score. The RIT score is unique to MAP and helps monitor progress over time. The blue bar is your child. The orange bar is the SSIS grade average.
  • For this testing session, the yellow bar is not included. It would show the grade average for students who took the test from around the world. This progress report allows you to compare your child’s results to his/her classmates.
  • To the right of the bar graph is a chart. SU22 stands for Summer 2022 – our testing time frame. The middle RIT score is your child’s RIT score from the bar graph. The range of RIT scores represents how your child would likely perform if given the same test in the very near future.
  • For this testing session, the percentile score was not calculated. This will be available for future tests.

As you analyze your child’s results, please keep in mind that standardized tests are only one piece of the overall assessment picture. The results of the MAP tests will be more beneficial in the future as we compare students’ growth over the different testing sessions. Various factors can affect students’ results for better or for worse. When reading the data, please remember this was the first time our students have taken the MAP test and it was done remotely.
