Early Years Family Picnic: Community, Sunshine, and Smiles

October began with one of our favourite annual traditions—our Early Years Family Picnic! Families gathered on our beautiful green campus to enjoy the sunshine, connect with one another, and explore the Early Years environment.

Students were so proud to introduce their parents to their teachers and friends, share their learning spaces, and enjoy outdoor games and activities together. It was a joy to see families sharing home-cooked snacks, cakes, and laughter a cross the field. A huge thank you to our Early Years team for organising such a thoughtful, community-centered event. We look forward to many more like it!

Get Reading Right: Phonics Comes to Life in K1 & K2

Our Get Reading Right phonics programme is now in full swing in K1 and K2! Students are excitedly learning the letters of the English alphabet and their corresponding sounds, laying the essential groundwork for confident reading and writing.

These early literacy skills are the foundation of their future learning, and it’s incredible to see how quickly they progress when the world of print is opened to them. You can support your child at home by providing a print-rich environment, asking about the letters, sounds, and words they’ve learned, and reading together as often as possible. Don’t forget to practise their ‘camera words’ to help build word recognition!

Phonemic Awareness Through Heggerty

In addition to phonics, students have also begun their journey into phonemic awareness through the Heggerty programme. This oral and auditory-based approach builds students’ ability to hear, isolate, and manipulate sounds in spoken words—an essential skill for reading and spelling.

Our young learners are thriving in these interactive, fast-paced sessions. From identifying beginning sounds to blending syllables and creating silly rhyming words, students are becoming more fluent, confident, and engaged each day.

Parent Volunteer Coffee Morning: Getting Involved at SSIS

On Wednesday, 29 October, our community came together for a special Parent Coffee Morning titled “How to Get Involved.” It was heartening to see so many parents eager to share their time, talents, and energy in support of our school.

The morning began with a warm gathering at the Book Tree, where school leaders shared the many ways parents can contribute—whether by helping during events, supporting classroom activities, or offering their unique skills behind the scenes. A short training session followed, equipping volunteers with the tools and knowledge they need to confidently step into their roles.

Whether volunteering once or on a regular basis, our parent volunteers play a vital role in enriching student experiences and strengthening the school-home partnership. We are grateful for your commitment and look forward to seeing you in action across campus!
