T1W2 – 9 Sept 2022
These days the Preschool division is bustling with laughter, friendly chatter and careful observation again as SSIS’s youngest learners start their new academic year! We couldn’t be happier to be back at school!
Environment as the Third Teacher
To support our young learners’ innate sense of curiosity and provide an environment that supports various types of learning, the Preschool common area has received a facelift. The new space, known as “Discovery Zones” considers of a large literacy playground, the Merlion Town where pretend play flourishes, a math zone with logical thinking games, an engineering/ construction space and a fully-equipped STEAM zone for sensory development. Similarly, classrooms have been carefully set up with areas of exploration, or as we call them provocations. Each area is carefully planned by the teaching team with items and set-up that ‘provoke’ discussion, interaction and communication.
Effective interactions are crucial, with research showing the impact of consistent, meaningful interactions on cognitive, behavioral and social outcomes. The relationships that our Preschools create with their teachers and peers play a vital role in their rapidly growing communication skills. Each and every day I witness small moments of profound value; here are just a very few.
Coloring together! This seemingly simple task is vital for fine motor development, hand-eye coordination and communication such as “Look at mine!”
Playing doctor with a friend helps little ones make sense of real-life situations and collaborate with others.
This ordering numbers game is numeracy, physical education and teamwork all wrapped into one action-packed activity!
Reading with a friend encourages a love for literacy while promoting idea sharing.
In the SSIS Preschool (Early Years) we believe in the holistic development of our learners. Creating an environment of exploration and discovery and establishing a calm, welcoming and safe environment are the foundation of the wonderful learning that is to come for our youngest Sabres! Be ready to be amazed!
