The Power of Gratitude in Our School Community

At Shanghai Singapore International School, we believe that gratitude is more than just a polite gesture; it is a powerful tool that can transform our school community. Sharing gratitude not only supports learning but also builds a sense of belonging and helps recognise the efforts of everyone involved in our remarkable school.

Supporting Learning

Research has shown that gratitude can have a positive impact on student learning. When students feel appreciated and valued, they are more likely to engage actively in their studies. A study by Harvard Graduate School of Education found that incorporating gratitude practices in the classroom can improve students’ social emotional learning and academic success. Simple acts of gratitude, such as thanking a classmate or student for their help or acknowledging a teacher’s support, can create a positive learning environment where students feel motivated and encouraged to do their best.

Building Belonging

Gratitude also fosters a sense of belonging within the school community. When students, staff, and parents express appreciation for one another, it strengthens the bonds between them. According to research from Greater Good Science Centre, gratitude contributes to a greater sense of social support and school belonging. This sense of belonging is crucial for students’ overall well-being and can lead to a more inclusive and supportive school environment. By regularly sharing gratitude, we can ensure that everyone at SSIS feels like a valued member of our community.

Recognising Effort

Acknowledging the efforts of students, staff, and parents is essential for maintaining a positive school culture. Gratitude helps to highlight the hard work and dedication that often goes unnoticed. When we take the time to thank someone for their contributions, it not only boosts their morale but also encourages them to continue striving for excellence. As noted by Colorin Colorado, gratitude can show educators what is working well and can inspire colleagues to try new approaches. Recognising effort through gratitude can lead to continuous improvement and innovation within our school.

Modelling Gratitude

As adults (all adults in the school community), it is important for us to model gratitude for our students/children. When teachers, staff and parents consistently express gratitude, it sets a positive example for students to follow and by demonstrating gratitude in our daily interactions, we educate our students/children on the importance of appreciation and kindness, which are essential life skills.

At SSIS, we are committed to creating a culture of gratitude. Please help us make it a habit to express our thanks and appreciation to one another, whether it’s a simple “thank you” or a heartfelt note. Together, we can build a stronger, more connected school community where everyone feels valued and supported.

Thank you for being a part of our SSIS family and for all that you do to make our school a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Stronger Together,

Mr. Shirley
