Senior School News

T1W8 – 27 Oct 2023

Dear Senior School parents,

Please click on the following updates below:

I do hope your children have enjoyed the week of Senior School experiential learning excursions. These excursions offer unique opportunities for hands-on learning, appropriate challenge and personal growth. A special thank you to all our trip leaders and chaperones that gave up so much time to ensure all our students had an engaging and memorable experience.

Our grade 12 students remained in School and has a week of deep focused work centred on completing their Extended Essay, working on their Theory of Knowledge essay and completing their Science Internal Assessments. Then also set SMART academic goals and attended academic mentoring sessions as they prepare for these last important few months before the final IB Diploma examinations.

On Monday, 16th October, we hosted over 70 universities at our annual World University Fair. Our students had the opportunity to talk with university representatives and continue to finetune their university and career pathway.  Please do contact our university guidance counselor Mr Daniel Gould ( daniel_gould@ssis.asia ) with specific questions about building your child university and careers portfolio.

We will be hosting another world university event in March.

Reading, especially reading for enjoyment is a crucial aspect of learning and we are excited to announce our upcoming Reading Extravaganza and Book Week. During this special week, there will be many event encouraging students to express their love for reading and literature. For the opening event on Monday 7th November students can dress up as their favourite adventure book character. Throughout the week, students can participate in various reading-related activities and competitions to showcase their literary knowledge and creativity.

As always, we appreciate your continued support in nurturing our students’ education and personal growth. If you have any questions or concerns,

Mr Steven Gaynor, Senior School Principal

Student Wellbeing

Dear parents/guardians,

October has been a real showcase of student leadership. Our students have seized many opportunities to lead in and outside the classroom (whether it be in lunch clubs, student-led ASPs, leadership camps or planning for the ever-popular International Family Bazaar on November 11th). The Student Council Investiture was indeed a proud moment for senior school as they took their pledge and outlined their vision for the year ahead. The EXCO are also model students who embody the Future Global Leader Attributes, and we are most proud to celebrate their elections.

This year, we are proud to not only have House Captains who plan and host RAPS House events but to introduce house ambassadors. They were selected from each form as a representative who could share their voice and work together with the whole RAPS team to foster and promote school spirit. Well done to another remarkable group of student leaders.

Another proud venture was our annual visit to The Kang Hua Senior Center. 13 Grades 11 & 9 students and 4 teachers spent the afternoon talking to and entertaining the senior folks; they also presented them with hats made in the Art class and cake to celebrate the Double Ninth Festival.

Reminders

Student Absence, Uniform and Regular communication

  • If your child is absent, please email your child’s form teacher as soon as possible with a reason. It is a Shanghai Education Committee requirement for all schools to record attendance and reasons for absence.
  • A reminder that students should arrive at school wearing shoes and ties. Full school uniform needs to be worn throughout the school day with the exception of PE lessons. As the weather starts to cool, students should also wear their school blazer as the first outer layer of clothing.

Please email me with any questions you may have, and we can arrange a follow-up phone call or meeting through the Senior School PA, Katharine Chen.
