Holistic Assessments in Primary School

At SSIS, we implement holistic assessment methods beyond traditional pen-and-paper examinations. Formative and summative assessment methods provide valuable feedback and support the holistic development and education of our students.

  • For students in Grades 1-3, we do not have end-of-year examinations. Instead, we implement a range of assessments that include topical tests, projects, class work and more to assess understanding and individual student progress.
  • Moving on to Grades 4-6, in addition to topical assessments, our students will have end-of-year exams for English, Mathematics, Science and Chinese. These exams are carefully crafted and administered by our team of specialist teachers who ensure the validity and reliability of the assessments.
  • Moreover, throughout the Primary School years (Grades 1-6), we utilise MAP Growth Tests. These tests, known as Measures of Academic Progress, focus on measuring students’ academic growth and progress. The MAP data is used to help inform teaching and learning.

By providing a comprehensive assessment framework, we strive to ensure that our students receive meaningful and accurate feedback on their learning journey, fostering their overall development and success.

What are MAP Growth Tests?

  • MAP Growth Tests, or Measures of Academic Progress, is an assessment method that aims to measure academic growth in students.
  • The use of MAP testing is widespread globally, making it a recognised and valuable tool in education.
  • It is not a typical standardised test for all students. Instead, it is a computer-adaptive test where the difficulty of the questions adjusts based on the student’s performance. Questions become harder when answered correctly and easier when answered incorrectly.
  • MAP assessments are conducted three times a year: at the beginning, mid-year and end of the school year. These assessments help teachers, parents, and students understand the student’s proficiency, inform teaching methods, and track progress throughout the year.
  • MAP testing is a fantastic tool for teachers, allowing them to personalise their teaching methods more effectively according to the individual needs of their students.
  • Another advantage of MAP testing is that educators gain factual data that can be used to benchmark student growth within a diverse and extensive global sample of learners. (MAP is used in local and international schools in more than 145 countries!)

What subjects will be assessed?

  • Grades 1 and 2 students will be assessed in the areas of math and reading.
  • Grades 3 to 6 students will be assessed in the areas of math, reading, language usage, and science.
