A Journey of Perseverance and Passion
SSIS had the privilege of hosting an extraordinary evening recital and iLead assembly talk featuring the internationally renowned pianist, Mr Wang Congyu.
From the moment we met Mr Wang, his down-to-earth demeanour and ever-present gentle smile left a lasting impression. However, it is when he sits at the piano that he truly transforms, entering a world of his own, not even glancing at his fingerings or anywhere else.
During his inspiring session with our senior school students, Mr Wang shared how his world was turned upside down at the age of 16. Leaving everything behind, he embarked on a journey to Paris, with no support system, no knowledge of French, and facing immense financial and emotional struggles. For a period of time, he even found himself living on the streets, with his only aspirations being shelter, food, and the opportunity to attend school. Yet, it was his passion for music and his unwavering determination to prove himself that carried him through those challenging times.
“Life is not merely about hitting the right notes; it’s about finding the strength to continue playing when the score seems insurmountable.”
He emphasised that while talent is undoubtedly important, it alone cannot guarantee success. He highlighted the essential role of hard work, perseverance, determination, and willpower in achieving one’s dreams.
During the question and answer session, Mr Wang shared valuable insights for the students to take away:
1. Even at his current stage of success, he emphasised that the path to achievement is far from smooth-sailing. It demands sacrifices, compromises, and uncertainties. As a performing artist, his home becomes the plane, constantly flying from one place to another, residing in unfamiliar hotels, never fully aware of what lies ahead.
2. Mr Wang expressed that the most successful individuals he has encountered are not necessarily the most naturally talented. Rather, they are the ones who firmly believe in their own abilities.
3. He encouraged students to realise that no one person has the power to judge them unless they willingly subject themselves to judgement. It all lies within their mindset and perception.
4. Instead of fixating on the “how” of achieving their goals, Mr Wang urged students to question whether they truly want to pursue them. The path to success may vary for each individual, but with genuine desire and determination, anything is possible.
5. Mr Wang shared his most profound learning experience: Even as a teacher, he considers himself a perpetual student. He learns something new every day from his students, who range in age from 8 to 72. He firmly believes in the importance of continuous learning and growth throughout life.
Mr Wang’s remarkable journey serves as a reminder that with unwavering passion, relentless perseverance, and a hunger for knowledge, one can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. Let his story inspire us all to embrace challenges, believe in our own potential, and never stop learning, regardless of our age or circumstances.
