T2W6 – 26 Jan 2023
Dear Parents and SSIS Community,
I hope that this finds you well, and that 2024 is proving to be a healthy, happy, and prosperous year so far.
The Aesthetics department saw some of our Primary and Senior Visual Arts students head down the street to the new Parkway Health hospital last week, and celebrate their work being displayed in the pediatrics wing of the hospital. Students created artwork during the summer as part of an initiative offered to the school by the hospital. Their work explored the themes of love and kindness and are on display in the main corridor of the pediatrics wing of the hospital as an ongoing collaboration between SSIS and Parkway Health.
Along with Mr. Hansard and Mr. Shirley, students were also invited to speak about the initiative and what it meant to them to take part. Grade 11 student Ella Yang gave a particularly moving speech when she discussed how her painting of two pairs of hands grasping each other represented how hospitals can be both “a place to welcome people into the world and a place to say goodbye to people”.
The students whose work is represented are:
Nyla Gurung – Grade 6
Naomi Peng – Grade 6
Dilys Qian – Grade 6
Ada Xie – Grade 6
Ella Yang Si Han – Grade 11
Kim Hanjoo – Grade 11
Milan Xiang – Grade 11
Tanisha Chaudhury – Grade 7
Zhang Yutian – Grade 11
Below are some photos from the event:
We look forward to continuing this wonderful initiative with Parkway Health in the future.
On the Music side of things, we are looking forward to the SSIS Combined Orchetra’s performance at the Senior Chinese New Year Show next week on February 2nd, starting at 2:30. The orchestra will start the show, and many other excellent acts will follow.
Last week I sent a message announcing that our new strings teacher, Ms. Wendy Qin, will join us after the holiday. Ms. Qin joins us with much experience as a performer and educator, and we are looking forward to her arrival. Strings classes will be for grades 3-6 students who have some prior experience. Please refer to my message on Managebac for more details.
I had the pleasure of stopping by the senior Drama ASP last Tuesday and am pleased to say that the production of Romeo and Juliet looks amazing! You will want to mark your calendars and attend one (or both) of the shows on March 7th and 8th. Ms.Tria and the Drama ASP students have been working hard all year on the show, and the results so far are outstanding. They have even had a full-scale balcony constructed for the iconic ‘balcony scene’. Shakespeare at its finest!
I am thankful to work with such artistic and visionary Future Global Leaders at SSIS. I look forward to many more wonderful moments in the months Ahead.
Wishing you and your loved ones a fantastic Year of the Dragon!
Mr Michael Hicks
Director of Aesthetics
