Maximising the Mathematics Potential of our Students

One of the major aims of SSIS is to provide our students with multiple pathways to success. And one of the ways is through providing various internal and external platforms for students to showcase their talents and stretch their potential both in their academics and non-academics development.

Every year, the Mathematics department engages the students in extra-curricular mathematics competitions so as to stretch and extend our high achievers who would benefit from additional challenges.

Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO)

On 12 April, 36 primary students from G4 to G6 took part in one of the largest math contests in Asia, Singapore and Asian Schools – Math Olympaid (SASMO) 2021. This is our first year of participation and we are pleased to announce that we have received 3 Silver and 5 Bronze awards, in addition to 5 Honourable Mentions. Our silver and bronze awardees are eligible to enter the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC).  Two of our Silver awardees will be representing the school to compete in SIMOC this July.

Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) is an international mathematics competition that is organised by Singapore International Math Contests Centre (SIMCC) with more than 30,000 participants from 21 countries. With realistic and high standards, SASMO contests aim to stretch the untapped thinking potential of the student population.

Mathematics Olympiad training is an enrichment programme for young mathematicians who are hungry for the right challenge. We want to provide our students a learning opportunity to broaden their mathematical knowledge, and strengthen their skills in problem solving, higher order thinking and logical thinking.

Proven Results

SSIS is renowned for our Singapore Math Curriculum that we implement, preserving the teaching techniques, sequencing and rigor that define Singapore Math. Singapore has consistently ranked the top in international math testing as it instills a deep understanding of Mathematics. Similarly, our Grade 6 students has achieved outstanding results in Mathematical Literacy during the International Schools Assessments (ISA) this year, which is a widely used international benchmarking tool. Our students achieved a score of 14.3% higher than all schools and 15.7% higher than like schools.

Looking Forward

As we continue to enhance our current curriculum and strengthen our teaching and learning startegies, we plan to embed High Order Thinking (HOT) skills in our primary school curriculum.

  • Next academic year, our Primary Math curriculum will be expanding on heuristics strategies, which is designed for all G3-6 students to further develop their problem-solving skills.
  • Implement a structured Math Olympiad screening and training in G4-6 in After School Programmes to enable our high flyers in Mathematics to stretch their potential.
  • Provide enrichment opportunities using Koobits, a new Math learning platform, in our math co-curricular programme for students to apply HOT strategies.

Congratulations to our Math Olympiad Awardees!
