Senior School News

T3W2 – 24 March 2023

Dear Senior School parents,

It has been a wonderful start to Term 3, with many enrichment and experiential learning events across the Senior School. I would like to take a moment to celebrate the many successes we have had over the past few weeks.

Our students have shown great dedication and perseverance in their studies, and it has been wonderful to see the progress they have made. The recent Parent Conferences and Saturday School make up days were a great opportunity for parents, teachers, and students to reflect on term 2 successes and identify strategies for improvement in Term 3.

In addition to conferences, we displayed some exciting science projects, including the Grade 8 Science Fair and Grade 11 Group 4 projects, which showcased the creativity and scientific skills of our students.

We are also proud to have recently completed our first G7 and G8 CCA Experiential Learning trip to Sheshan, Sculpture Park and the Senior School Excursions Both have provided our students with challenging and rewarding learning experiences outside of the classroom. Later this year, our Grade 10 students will have the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award during a weekend trip scheduled for 8th to 11th of June, at the end of the IGCSE examinations.

Senior School Excursions: G7 Nanbeihu, G8 Anji, G9 Yuyao, and G11 Moganshan

We have also come to the end of grade 10 and Grade 12 mock examinations. The next few weeks are crucial for our external examination grade levels as they review their last two years of learning and practice retrieving this knowledge for the final exams. I encourage all students to contact their teachers with their final revision questions and arrange meetings at lunch and after school. Study leave for students starts on Monday, 24th April. All grade 10 and 12 students should attend school as normal until this date. After this date, if students want to choose the study leave option, parents should leave a comment on Managebac as well as email me, Katharine and the appropriate curriculum coordinator.

Looking ahead, we have a busy week with upcoming Chinese Culture week and Sports day (Wednesday 29th March), which promises to be a fun-filled event for all involved.

Full details about the application process are available on the school website.

Parents and students are encouraged to speak to their teachers or academic coordinators if they have any questions about the application process. The application deadline is Friday 7th April.

I am looking forward to reviewing applications and the exciting new Scholarship initiatives.

And finally, we are pleased to invite you to our next Principal’s coffee morning on Friday, 31st March. Representatives from the University of Nottingham, Ningbo campus will also be in attendance. You will have the opportunity to learn about their university offerings and ask questions.

Please check your ManageBac messages for the invitation and sign-up code.

With gratitude

Mr Steven Gaynor, Senior School Principal

Student Wellbeing

Dear parents,

At SSIS, we endeavour that all students, across their school journey, exhibit all three of our Future Global Leader Attributes.

  • Recently, we saw this immense ‘Love for Humanity’ when both our students and the entire community rallied together to collect donations for the Turkey/Syria earthquake disaster.
  • Then last week, students showcased their talents as ‘Lifelong Learners’ in the Grade 8 Science Fair, the Grade 11 Group 4 Projects and a fantastic PTC!
  • This week our students demonstrate ‘Strength of Character’ as Grades 7,8,9 & 11 went on excursions and challenged themselves in an array of activities whilst our Grades 10 & 12 persevered with the Mock exams.

On March 28th at 8.30 am in the Senior School Assembly, we will celebrate our continued successes at the Character & Leadership Awards. We take this opportunity to present certificates for those students who have excelled and shown that they are the Future Global Leaders for Term 2.

We are also honoured to have a parent ILEAD guest speaker, Mr Stephane Monsallier, with us and he will speak about ‘How will AI shape the future?’ This is a much talked about topic and our panel of teachers and students will pose a series of questions to him. This is an open invitation to all parents, and we would love to see as many of you there.

Reminders

If your child is absent, please email your child’s form teacher as soon as possible with a reason. A reminder that students should arrive at school wearing full school uniform, including smart black shoes, dark socks and ties.

As the weather warms, students should no longer be wearing outer jackets and instead wear their school blazer as the first outer layer of clothing.

Please email me with any questions you may have, and we can arrange a follow-up phone call or meeting through my PA, Katharine Chen.
